Want to move to the mountains? Lets talk!

I made a decision to work in the mountains when I was 18.  Since then have been trying to find some relevant work which could help me fulfill this dream.  Voice of Himachal, the non-profit which I helped setup in 2003  did help me in moving back with a purpose.

Now that I am here and have lived for more than 3 years high up in the mountains I look forward to networking with like minded people who share similar beliefs such as mine.

Over these years have gained some insights about living in the mountains and I hope to connect / network / team-up with people sharing the following traits:

  • You should be thoroughly bored of staying in cities like Delhi / Chandigarh / Bangalore / Pune / Mumbai / Chennai / Kolkata / Hyderabad.
  • Should be a nature lover and a greenie.
  • Should have love for the mountains, its ecology and people.
  • Willingness to walk in wilderness for long distances is a must. (To catch up with the team when not working).
  • Understands and values the importance of start-up/entrepreneurship/bootstrapping etc.
  • You are comfortable working from an office little larger than a car garage but with amazing views of mountains and river flowing by.
  • Once in a while be ready to cook meals for self and office colleagues.
  • Should be comfortable watching the latest flick on a pirated CD and not in a multiplex.
  • Seeking spirituality yet enough money to lead a comfortable and stress free life.
  • Looking forward to adapting to a slower pace of life and slow not because of traffic jams.
  • You should be ready to teach the skills honed over the years with the local community & freshers.
  • Willing to learn some life skills from the community in return.
  • Would like to spend Saturday evenings gazing at stars with family and friends.
  • Enjoy the bluest of the blue sky which is free of dust and pollution.
  • Sees the next one to two years as a journey and not the end in itself.

Well if you think you are so desperate that you would like to hitch the next bus/tempo or even bailgari up the serpentine roads then lets talks.  Maybe this helps you exercise a choice which you always wanted to.

  1. I would have love to do, but I am working these days so therefore would not be possible to have the most adventure of the life, I have a home there in Dharamshala but I work in Delhi, so I seriously miss my place and would have love to join you.

Can you tell me if there is any particular job for doing this, I mean if one gets paid for the work in mountains??

  2. I am working with a fast food restaurant named SBARRO in Delhi as a store shift Manager. My home is in Noida but I have my roots in Dari (Dharamshala).
Don’t know if you remember me, we met in Jassi’s Gym in Noida sector 36, we used to gym together with couple of friends of mine.
Was just thinking is this working in mountains your profession?

  3. Paras its been long since we met but I am sure if you place a face to your mails I will remember. Moving to mountains is not my profession just doing it out of passion. Will help if we have some bright minds working out of the hills. Not sure how I can help you but there are many hotels and chains opening shop here as well. Specially the 5 star ones. See if you can through those.

  5. Hey Varun:

I am really amazed to accidentally find you and your blog. This blog has wobbled a low priority thread ( being geeky but you understand CS) inside me.

If you have time and I can be of some help, I would really be part of your venture one way or other. I am originally from Dehra Gopipur and working in Delhi / NCR for last 8 years. Please have a look at my profile and advise.

I would really like to be part of your endeavours but even if I can’t I am still happy to have read this.

    Regards,
    Nitin Sood

  6. No plans yet, only ideas which I have been contemplating. Related to implementation of Renewable energy technologies (solar/wind hybrid) in rural areas. I am yet to find a way to make it self sustainable and financially viable.

    1. Manish, would like to hear more about your plans? Maybe I can introduce you to some people who are already working in this field in HP. Any plans to visit home? Dharamshala ?
